On January 31, the Women’s Hockey Club proudly hosted its first annual Military Appreciation Night, an event dedicated to honoring military members and first responders across the Lincoln community. What began as a single game quickly became a meaningful celebration of service, partnership, and community support. Originally, the team was scheduled to face the United States Air Force Academy, but travel restrictions ultimately prevented the matchup. Rather than canceling the event, the team adapted and faced off against 402’s Finest, an adult hockey club of military members and first responders. The matchup reinforced the purpose of the night: bringing together those who serve, both on and off the ice, in a shared space of recognition and respect.
A highlight of the evening was the ceremonial puck drop, which featured representatives from our jersey sponsors, the Air & Space Forces Association-Lincoln Chapter, alongside Air Force ROTC cadre from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Their participation symbolized the strong relationship between the Women’s Hockey Club, the military community, and local supporters who continue to invest in our program and our mission.
The Women’s team also debuted custom military-themed jerseys, created specifically for the night. These jerseys were auctioned off during the game, with all proceeds benefiting Team Red, White & Blue, a nonprofit dedicated to enriching the lives of veterans through community and physical activity. Every jersey was sold, resulting in a nearly $2,500 donation, a testament to the generosity and enthusiasm of those in attendance.
Planning for Military Appreciation Night began as early as July and required extensive coordination with both the hockey and military communities. Along the way, the team faced multiple challenges, scrambling to secure an opponent, navigating jersey production timelines, and resolving last-minute game-day logistics. Pushing through these setbacks demonstrated the resiliency, adaptability, and dedication of the Women’s Hockey Club. What could have derailed the event instead became a defining example of teamwork and perseverance.
This night would not have been possible without an incredible support system. From sponsors and community partners to volunteers, supporters, and fans of Women’s Husker Hockey, each played a role in making the event a success. The overwhelming support reaffirmed the importance of this night, not just as a game, but as a tradition worth continuing. Military Appreciation Night set the foundation for an annual event that honors service, strengthens community ties, and reflects the values of this team. We are proud of what was accomplished and excited to continue growing this tradition in the years ahead!
